Meet your lawyer

A good lawyer-client relationship involves trust. This is especially true when dealing with Life & Legacy Planning or making life altering investment decisions involving the purchase or sale of your home. David will strive to make you feel comfortable at the outset, informed throughout the process of your file and, ideally, eager to come back with your next property transaction or estate planning need.

Comfort & confidence through trust

David earned his business degree from Acadia University after enjoying the wonderful Foundation Year Program at Dalhousie’s King’s College. David attended the University of Liverpool (England) before starting his legal career as a litigator in Toronto in 2010. After returning to Nova Scotia, David did some consulting work for First Nations, worked as an entrepreneur and small business owner before starting Burton Law in 2020.

#Haligonian@Heart

David, one of six children, grew up on Halifax’s Robie Street. Unbeknownst to David his informal legal education began as a child at the family dinner table where his busy professional parents led nightly ‘debates’ on the days’ events with his siblings and the added flavour that comes with a live-in foreign exchange student.

David believes that in order to fully appreciate what makes Halifax so special you have to leave and experience life elsewhere. David spent seven years in his mother’s native Scotland, three years living in the Caribbean, and the best part of a decade working as a lawyer in Toronto before returning home. Now that David’s found his way home he has no intention of ever leaving!

David is so much more than a Haligonian lawyer; he is:

  • an entrepreneur;
  • an avid rugby player and hiker;
  • a Big Brother; &
  • a lover of Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

Fun Fact

As a young child, David spent many summer days fishing for mackerel. Decades later, David will happily share the location of his favourite childhood mackerel spot with any client. Keen anglers are encouraged to act fast as this secret won’t survive the encroaching million dollar homes for much longer. Hint: it might be on the Arm somewhere?
